Job Overview and Requirements

Character Lab is looking for a UX Strategist to join our team. Reporting to the head of our User Experience team (Tara Taylor), you will manage our user research and design-thinking process and help develop digital products and new processes that support scientists, educators, strategic partners, and employees. This is an exciting opportunity for a mission-driven, user-centered, innovative professional to have an impact by ensuring we develop systems to advance scientific insights that help kids thrive. Your Responsibilities

  • Manage the design improvement process for Character Lab Research Network, a digital platform that enables leading scientists to conduct research with schools representing 100,000 students across the country
  • Infuse design thinking into the organization by training and overseeing a group of user experience ambassadors in user research, ideation, and prototyping
  • Lead user experience and service design projects for multiple user groups, including students, teachers, school leaders, researchers, and/or internal staff
  • Facilitate engaging and productive ideation workshops, build clear journey maps and system diagrams, and lead wireframing and prototyping processes
  • Lead full cycles of user research—from open-ended discovery to concept testing—including writing surveys and scripts, moderating interviews, and overseeing analysis that leads to actionable strategic recommendations
  • Prolonged and irregular hours of duty, as necessary
  • Occasional travel for work-related responsibilities and needs (once safe travel can resume)
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned

You might be a good fit if you

  • Have a bachelor’s degree and 3-6 years of professional experience or in place of a bachelor’s degree, 5-10 years of professional experience in UX strategy, user research, UX design, and/or product management 
  • Can gather and prioritize needs and synthesize them into effective user research scripts 
  • Have experience in building clear user flows and wireframes 
  • Have exceptional organizational and project management skills
  • Have a strong attention to detail
  • Have a track record of building strong partnerships with diverse stakeholders, especially in communities of historically marginalized people
  • Think critically and love to identify system improvements
  • Communicate clearly and have excellent interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrate resilience 
  • Want to influence a team to see possibilities beyond present circumstances 
  • Have a fierce work ethic and sense of purpose, with the ability to work collaboratively as part of a dynamic start-up

Logistics and Application Process

Character Lab has a Distributed Workplace policy, which means that we fully support employees working remotely from any U.S. location. You will decide whether to work remotely or on-site at our office headquarters in Philadelphia.

The salary range for this position is $70,000-$80,000 and is commensurate with an individual’s experience and skills. All full-time employees receive a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, access to a 403(b) with matching opportunities, 18 days of PTO per year (and more gained with tenure), and paid holidays.
